Grade 9 Citizenship Workbook in French | Alberta French Immersion Social Studies | Études sociales 9e année: Citoyenneté
How have the rights of Canadians changed over time, and who gets to decide? This French immersion workbook takes Grade 9 students through that question, the guiding question of the Citizenship organizing idea in Alberta's new Social Studies curriculum: "De quelles façons les droits des citoyens évoluent-ils?"
A complete Citizenship unit, entirely in French
Students follow the story of Canadian citizenship and rights from the Canadian Citizenship Act of 1947 to the present day. Along the way, they explore citizenship and immigration status, Canada's shift from exclusionary immigration policies to the points system, the Persons Case and the "living tree" doctrine, patriation and the Constitution Act, 1982, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, reasonable limits and the Oakes test, the October Crisis, the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords, and the responsibilities that come with citizenship.
Rigorous, honest history
This is not a list of dates to memorize. Students weigh competing rights, apply the Oakes test to new situations, compare how the same event is remembered differently in Québec and the rest of Canada, and consider how to teach figures with complicated legacies, such as Emily Murphy. Difficult history is presented with care and accuracy, so students learn that progress for one group has not always meant progress for all.
